Superbly written, this is an account by a participant in the airlift that supplied the blockaded capital of the Khmer Republic and several provincial capitals with food and other necessities of life during the last year of the United States' direct involvement in the Indochina War. Civilian pilots from many nations stepped in to fill the gap left by the departing American armed forces; they had to contend not only with makeshift facilities and heavy fire from the invading Vietnamese but also with a monumentally inept and corrupt Cambodian bureaucracy, which hindered the effective operation of the airlift in countless way.

well written and worth reading
By G. B. Talovich
Few people remember the Phnom Penh airlift and the scrappy, brave pilots and crews who somehow managed to fly in spite of everything. Charles Heckman writes entertainingly and authoritatively about his experience there, in lively detail. I’m not a pilot, so I am probably missing a lot of the nuances of the flying stories, but they are still worth reading. The photos in the book are invaluable.
My particular interest in this book was that Heckman was a Tri 9 pilot. My uncle, Jim Zeigler, founded and ran the company. I worked for Tri 9 in Viet Nam, delivering pizzas, before Uncle Jim moved to Cambodia and started the airline. I knew John Yim, rest his soul. This book is light-hearted, but it preludes an unspeakable tragedy.
