Timothy L. Warner is an IT professional and technical trainer based in Nashville, TN. As Director of Technology for a progressive high school, he created and managed a self-servicing warranty repair shop for all Apple hardware used at the institution. Warner has been an Apple enthusiast and power user since the original Macintosh was released in 1984. He has worked in nearly every facet of IT, from systems administration and software architecture to technical writing and training.

BEST Book, Keep on publishing more!

The detail, witt and content along with the photos couldn't be much better. I found this book a BIG help when it came to fixing my grand kids iPods (4 of them!). I know I don't want to repair iPods or I will have to charge more. I also fixed 2 iPhones too. This book almost made it fun to make repairs. The tips and tricks helped a lot too. Worth 2x the price!

I purchased this book not knowing what to expect. My adventure began while staring at my broken, out-of-warranty, iPhone 4S contemplating a near-$200 Apple repair bill. In desperation I did a quick search on iPhone repair and stumbled across a web site selling parts for iPhone repair. After digesting information on the site I decided if lesser beings could repair I-devices, I could too. I then began searching for a book telling me what I need to know to repair my iPhone.
Believe it or not, I found practically no reasonable reference books available for layman repair of i-devices. After an extensive search, I arrived at The Unauthorized Guide and downloaded it to Kindle. The book did not disappoint.
It took only a short evening to digest the entire book. It went quickly because The Unauthorized Guide is well written from a practical point of view. The author does not waste words on theoretical musings and background designed to puff or impress. He provides just enough explanation to frame the objective then jumps into the step-by-step detail of the repair. The book is organized logically and to the point. The author walks you through the step-by-step repair, the pitfalls of attempting the repair, and the tools or in some instances the skills needed to successfully complete a fix to your i-device. The Unauthorized Guide is a terrific tool for anyone with i-devices who lacks deep pockets to use Apple or an authorized repair service. Whether it is replacing a screen, a battery, or installing a new antenna, the guide imparts the knowledge needed to complete the repair.
It the book perfect? No. I found it lacking in the area of diagnostics. To be fair, the Apple Genius process involves software tools exclusive to Apple and their authorized service people. Diagnostic tools literally are not available to the consumer. Even so, the guide explains how to become part of the Apple system and participate in the i-device service sector. Unfortunately, the guide lacks any alternative to diagnosing what may be wrong with a device. If you find yourself in a position of "it doesn't work", the guide cannot tell you how to know what is wrong. A flow chart or description of how to test i-device components would make the guide perfect. For now, The Unauthorized Guide to iPhone, iPad and iPod Repair is simply near perfect.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in repairing their i-device or simply wishing to understand what is under that shiny glass screen.
PS ... With purchase of a $13 screw driver, I was able to disassemble my i-Phone 4S and reattach a loose battery clip. In other words, the guide paid for itself with the very first repair.

Great reference!

I have really been enjoying this book! Mr Warner has an excellent sense if humor, and is easy to follow! I have been using ifixit.com to learn to repair idevices and the site is great! But, this book gives you tips on things you wouldn't have thought to look for- like the brand and where to buy the tape that apple uses! This book definitely has a permanent home in my repair area!
