By far one of the most important books ever written. It's short, to the point and life changing. God's very nature is mercy. This book makes that point loud and clear through the author's lengthy encounter in Russia with Rembrandt's 8-foot tall painting, the "Prodigal Son." So who am I most like? There is the dutiful son on the right who is bitter and wringing his hands in frustration. The younger son is on the left - having spent his inheritance on wine, women and travel, but now is beaten, broken and searching for truth.

This book explains how we are the son who stayed home, the prodigal son, and the father in our lifetime. What we do with each of these roles leads us to search deep inside and become the person God created us to be. I have given several copies away to family members.

Very fascinating look at a traditional painting and a very familiar parable. I could relate to every perspective the author explores. Having bought a used copy, I enjoy seeing what the previous owner underlined and the comments made in the margins. I have been reading this book in a book club, which I would recommend. The book puts forth many excellent discussion points that would appeal to a wide variety of readers.
