About the Author
Mary Reckmeyer, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of Gallup’s Donald O. Clifton Child Development Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Under her leadership, the center has received national attention for excellence in early childhood education, workplace contribution and developmental results and has helped thousands of children build their lives around their strengths. The center has served as a model for schools nationwide and as a training center for teacher development and education.
Reckmeyer has been with Gallup for more than 30 years. She has served as an Educational and Strengths-Based Development Consultant and Seminar Leader; studied talent-based interviews of more than 2,000 individuals, including children, teachers and parents; and helped create the Clifton Youth StrengthsExplorer, an assessment designed to identify talent in young people. Reckmeyer also coauthored How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids, based on the #1 New York Times bestseller How Full Is Your Bucket?
Reckmeyer is a former teacher who holds degrees in education and educational psychology. Her research has included youth strengths development, parents of minority achieving students, learning disabilities, educational programming and lifespan development. She has studied outstanding schools and has conducted formal research into what makes an outstanding child care center.
Reckmeyer and her husband live in Lincoln, Nebraska, and have four children.

Great Book (Be Careful With Kindle Edition?)

Content of the book is four-star. Great insights as to the importance of negotiating the interplay between our own talents (as parents) and those of our kids -- which may or (more likely) may not be similar in nature. Downgraded to 3-stars because the book is supposed to include access codes to the Strengthsfinder and StrengthsExplorer on line assessments -- but have had no luck from either Amazon or Gallup in getting those codes for the Kindle edition. Codes were to supposed to be sent via email following purchase, but has been a week without receiving anything and neither company seems to have a solution. Very poor execution.
Update (2016-02-12):
After multiple attempts and ongoing correspondence with Amazon over a 10-day period, their support team was finally able to provide codes for both assessments. Note that I never received the notification with codes that was supposed to be automatically sent after the purchase. It was only after continued requests that they were provided via correspondence with Amazon. Upgraded to 4 stars because I think the content is so good and valuable for both parents and children.

Highly recommend.

Strengths Based Parenting has taught me that parenting is not a "one size fits all" approach. I have 2 children and they are very different from one another. Using the tools in the book, including the Strengths assessments that are included with the book, has truly changed my parenting and quite frankly has made my life as a mother a little easier. Highly recommend.

easy to understand story what is wrong with schools today

Just received this book in the mail yesterday. I flipped straight to Chapter Six: Strengths-Based Schools. It starts with a four page animal parable that explains through a common sense, easy to understand story what is wrong with schools today, and why strengths-based engaged schools is a better answer to all the failed school reforms and teacher accountability efforts. Now if only the local community and school leaders could get an opportunity to read this.
Below is my "elevator speech" on why pursuing engaged schools is a better way to go. I pass it on whenever I get the opportunity.
Why it is important to pursue this -
If one believes our country’s survival is based in part on economic prosperity, and that our future economic prosperity is based on the education of today’s students, then we have a compelling need to help students reach their potential through academic achievement in preparation for a life of achievement.
The problem with our education system is that students have changed.
Our education system was designed at a time when most students came to school externally motivated to learn and achieve. That external motivation is no longer a trait of a large percentage of todays’ students.
Forty years ago the majority of students came to school motivated to learn. This motivation to achieve was provided at home. School discipline was the norm, and it was reinforced at home.
Today’s students are different. A significant percentage, perhaps the majority now, do not come to school with that externally-provided motivation to learn and achieve. Further, the historic school discipline is no longer part of the system. Or it has been severely weakened. The response to slipping student performance is to put more pressure (accountability) on the teachers to improve student performance. Doing so without recognizing the student has changed is just placing more stress on an outmoded education system that can no longer deliver to many of the students. This stress is causing new teachers to abandon their teaching career. Veteran teachers are discouraging young adults from pursue teaching careers. That is quite unbelievable, but we all have direct examples of both. We need to stop accepting that as the norm and see it for what it is - a major wake up call that our education system is disintegrating and we, the community, need to step in and change it. It CAN NOT be changed from within from the bottom up, or even at the principal level. I have been part of three attempts to build engaged schools over the last ten years and all three have failed - one at the principal level, one at the vice principal and teacher team level, and one at the teacher level. The system is too bureaucratic and resistant to change from within. Well meaning, passionate teachers who want to apply the strengths assessment to their homerooms get over run by the requirements of the system. They are working hard to just tread water.
This drop in student achievement is discussed in detail in “Mothers, Leadership, and Success” by Guy Odom. I was introduced to his book in the mid 90s via a book review in the local paper by the then school superintendent.
The solution to educating today’s students is to change the education system to tap into the internal motivation of the student through engaging their talents, rather than continue to assume, in error, that students bring this motivation to achieve to the classroom.
An education psychologist at the Univ of Nebraska, Don Clifton, studied what made great school counselors and professors. He had graduate students conduct research on the question. His many years of research was rolled into a private company to help companies select for talent. Clifton then became CEO of Gallup in the 80s and combined his approach to individual excellence with Gallup’s world class data collection, research and analysis capability. Today much of Gallup’s work is in building engaged customers, building engaged employees, and building engaged students. Disclaimer - I have no association with Gallup.
The foundation of Gallup’s work recognizes that to achieve high levels of success begins with knowing ones’ natural talents, and then leveraging those talents with knowledge and skill to achieve performance strengths. Gallup provides a road map for applying this approach to schools in a book “Building Engaged Schools”. In these schools, each student’s natural talents are identified, affirmed, developed, and used as a basis to explore the field of work and careers. Informational interviewing and job shadowing are a core part of these schools. By starting with their natural talents, students are internally motivated to put forth the effort to explore and develop their talents to achieve. Students graduate with a high degree of confidence in knowing their talents, and knowing what work/career paths maximize use of their talents, and are internally motivated to pursue those chosen work/career paths, leading to high levels of achievement in life.
