Huge and handy

The extended warranty is up, I'm on my own. I have a million tools and know my way around cars, but the E53 is a complex vehicle and there are a few surprises. Worth it to avoid having to run 40 miles to get a part or a special tool.
The book is huge and equal to any coffee table book in size and heft. People thumb through it, get a glazed look and put it down. Quite imposing.
Reading through brake replacement and basic maintenance is not quite as easy as it could be, but it is there. Some things are glossed over like the recommended every two years brake fluid replacement, when it is something that can be done by many people if explained properly.
I prefer good line drawings to low resolution photos. Very low resolution in some cases. Does it really cost more to print with some resolution?
If it was up to me, I would have a separate section that was nothing but maintenance and common mechanical repairs, like brakes, belts and hoses. As it is you have to go through the book to find each repair. The good news is that the index is very good and in time you get to the section you need.
It is nice that it just covers the same model car, the X5, and not a whole bunch of sedans and such. This focused approach makes the book quite useable and unlike manuals I have used for other cars in the past.
The book is so nice that I am afraid of getting it dirty out in the garage. My plan is to scan the pages I am using and leave the book inside.
I had a reprieve of a few years of warranty, but now I am back to fixing and maintaining my cars again. This book was a no-brainer to make this a good experience.
My '05 X5 is a fine vehicle, the best car I have ever owned, and almost totally reliable. I believe I can get a couple more years out of it at least at fairly minimal expense.

not the greatest manual...but it does have some info that can be useful.

Kind of a pricey manual being that it isn't written very well. I had to replace timing guides on a X5 with the M62 motor. It was a bit tricky finding torque specs as they didn't have a torque spec sheet, just random torque specs throughout the book. The book does have lots of wiring schematics which is great but haven't needed to use any of them yet so I am unsure of their accuracy. having been a mechanic for over 20 years, I was hoping for a better written manual.

Very dissappointing

This manual is more of a technical manual meaning a ton of electronic diagrams. Not much details for the DIY mechanic. In comparison to a Haynes manual. The Haynes Manual I would rate as a 10 and this manual for the DIY a 4. Probably why there are used books for sale. If you had electrical problems with your X5 I would highly recommend. Also good detailed info on removing Cylinder heads & tools required. Plus I have the N62 Engine & all the details are for the M62 Engine. I would search you tube first but this is still a good book for your library, you never know when you may need it.
