Willard (philosophy, Univ. of Southern California) considers popular Christian belief to be missing out on the essence and origin of its true meaning. Since "consumer Christianity" mistakes the logo for the logos, today's brand-name Christians have jumped on a bandwagon that has run off without its true leader. The imitation of Christ has lost its central importance in Christianity, according to Willard. He examines reasons why this is so and sets out a detailed plan for reawakening such commitment, which requires a genuine willingness to die to self in contrast with mere consumption of Jesus' merits as an insurance against death. Willard's passionate insights are thoroughly argued, though not all may agree with his curriculum for changing people's beliefs. Most suitable for pastoral collections.

Hard to listen too not because it isn't good, its just SO DEEP! Dalls has a profound grasp on spiritual truth that is hard to keep up with at times, but worth the effort.

A masterpiece.

Beyond phenomenal. I took over a year to weave my way through this book, taking notes and praying and thinking through this masterpiece. I can't say enough how much this book blew apart my notions of the Sermon on the Mount, in particular the 'beattitudes.' Don't skim this book - digest it. If you only want to own one book in this genre, let it be this one.

Going further and deeper into the Kingdom.

Heavy theology. Slow, thoughtful reading required. Jesus said that the kingdom of God is here and now among us. Chapter 8 provides a road map. The rest of the chapters help the reader understand the perils of sin and the depth and beauty of love and grace. They are necessary, but remember not to get so wrapped in complexity that you forget the beautiful simplicity of Jesus' message: it is about the relationship.
