[The Collected Works of Thaddeus GolasVol.3- From Seed Center Books]Love and Pain- A Map of Consciousness. The Collected Works of Thaddeus Golas Vol. 3
A follow-up to The Lazy Mans Guide to Enlightenment or perhaps a final revision to it. The Guide is still very significant to all those who sense the consciousness with which it was written but Thaddeus goes deeper with this new writing; he wanted leave behind a blueprint of his metaphysics that would withstand the test of time, beyond the euphoria of the '60s. He was, after all, a self-described hard-nosed critic of the many charlatans of the New Age; he didn't settle for benign therapies that passed for 'spirituality.' For all the comfort that an uplifting book can bring to our imagination, Thaddeus Golas wanted to write a text that he would like to find for himself, or give to a good friend; information that is solid, and that can be relied upon, even when the Universe fails to sustain all our fondly held beliefs about it. "I am a destroyer of ideas," he proposed, "and whatever I could not destroy is in Love and Pain." Love and Pain is a major work, intricate and subtle. It is an audit of our beliefs, and a wake-up call. It is also revolutionary! In time, it may come to be seen as one of the most important metaphysical books ever written; it is sure, at the very least, to illicit strong reactions from readers.

Love and Pain- The Primordial Power Pair
By erin rose
What a thrill to find this in print after all these years! The first time I read this was in 1985, when Thaddeus showed me his yet unpublished manuscript. After reading his first book, The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment, I'd come looking for a guru who would teach me to be happy. But the author never wanted to be a guru, and I wasn't ready for the pragmatism in my spiritual exploration that Love and Pain required. I was only 19, and I hated his new work. Although he was patient and kind, I was immature and impatient. How I wish I could turn back time. It took me 25 years to learn for myself what he was trying to tell me. I guess I'm one of those people who need to learn things the hard way. But if you'd like to save yourself some trouble in life, which is the reason Thad told me he wrote this, then read this book.

I remember Thad trying to explain to me the meaning of paradox. He said so much of the pain in life is caused a refusal to meet reality on it's own terms. Science and our modern mentality seek to manipulate reality, but there are always unforeseen ill effects. For all our progress, we seem to be degenerating in many respects. Even many spiritual traditions encourage us to look for ways to prolong our expectations or deny our disappointments, in effect, arguing with reality. Love and Pain tells us that the pushing and pulling at what we fear or desire is a futile fight and only entangles us further. Thad's main assertion here is that the way out of the viscous cycle of fluctuating polarities - which all energy is - is to stop such expenditures of energy, or at least stop believing that they really change anything in the long run.

In this book, Thad explains that, like everything else in our universe, we have basically three states available to us: matter, energy, and space. Obviously, as bodies, we spend a lot of our time focused on matter, but the energetic realm is where most of our human experience seems to take place. This is the state where everything is happening, changing, engaging. It is the realm where losses are incurred and gains are made. So, it is extremely seductive to get caught up in the action; push and pull. But since all energy is cyclical, losses and gains are only temporary and illusory. Like the proverbial snake in the garden, energy is a spiral that leads us in confused circles between good and evil, up and down, in and out. The process is exhausting and any knowledge we gain tends to be one-sided. However, we have the third option of keeping our consciousness on space; the immaterial and non-energetic. It looks like nothing, sounds like nothing, and yet it allows everything to be- in balance. Essentially recognizing ourselves beyond definitions gives a whole new perspective and proportion to our experiences in matter and energy. This state of being is within our possibilities and yet it is largely ignored by human consciousness.

Taoists, Buddhists, and Yogis have pointed to a state of freedom beyond struggle. But Thaddeus talks about it like a modern American, in a way that cuts though any mystique to reveal a door that's been there all the time. If you feel ready, open it. Giving up the struggle is the hardest thing for us do do. But it's easy, too. There is a way out of the drama, if we want it.

Rest in Peace, Thad.

Love and Pain is a must read for anyone earnest in understanding our place in this reality.
By Bruno-
A long time ago I read, "The Guide" The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment.
Something in it struck truly deep within. And the book has been a faithful companion since 1975.

Love and Pain is an extension and, as the author puts it, a correction to The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment. It goes beyond what Golas previously had to say.

Love and Pain is a "reality-check" and an eye opener for anyone interested in how the world around us functions. Above all, it is an honest attempt to situate human life in relation to primal existence. Be it regarding questions on science, metaphysics, society, art, energy, consciousness, reality, and of coarse, love and pain; has something meaningful and very deep to say to anyone interested in the meaning of our lives in Reality.

It is not an "easy" book. Once it has been thoroughly read and clearly understood, it's a "life changer" in the truest sense.

Love and Pain: A Postgraduate Course in DIY Metaphysics
By Jason Stoneking
Like many people, when I first read The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment (the now famous precursor to Love and Pain), my mind was opened to a whole new set of possibilities. But my hunger wasn't satisfied by this book alone. In some ways, it provided me with more questions than answers. I wanted to know the details of Expansion and Contraction. I wanted to see the blueprints for how Golas's view of the universe played out in every one of my daily pursuits. I wanted the full explanation for the practical application of the knowledge. And that's what I got when I opened Love and Pain. Love and Pain is the next level, the class for the teachers. As the title suggests, it is with both tender compassion and merciless unsentimentality that Golas here elucidates the nature of our shared reality. He offers a completely unifying theory of atomic relationships that is equally applicable to everything from molecular biology to space travel, and also serves as a working overlay for our relationships to art, religion, philosophy and each other. Golas has succeeded in fully bridging the gap between the physical sciences and the various incarnations of spirituality. None of these things need be separated. None of the things that we think, feel, see or experience are mutually exclusive. And Golas deftly illustrates the way in which all these things make sense together. He gives us the information that has the power to pull down all the walls between selves and others, truths and lies, physics and metaphysics. The only thing he can't do is decide for you whether or not you're ready to have those walls torn down. He doesn't presume to diagnose your level of preparedness for seeing the universe as what it really is. He doesn't provide a replacement lifeplan for those who rely heavily on mythology for a behavioral structure. But what he does do is arm us with a functional model of existence, a down to earth, easy to read, practical understanding of what it means 'to be'. And nothing he says contradicts any scientific or empirical data that we have accumulated as a species. Au contraire, he unites them with the subtle beauty that one recognizes in a mathematical formula when it is proved true. If you really, deeply, want to know what's going on and how it affects you, if you really are ready to let go of all the partial answers we think we have, then this is your chance. Love and Pain is the book in which Thaddeus Golas finally turns all the lights on. But it's up to you whether or not you're going to like what you see.
